Frequently asked questions

The maximum MOT fee set by the DVSA is £54.85 for cars. Many garages in Probus charge less than this. Prices vary between centres, so compare listed prices on Fixaroo and enquire from the page — listings are not instant-book by default.
An MOT tests your vehicle's roadworthiness. Inspectors check brakes, lights, tyres (tread depth and condition), steering and suspension, exhaust emissions, seatbelts, bodywork, windscreen visibility, and number plates. The engine's mechanical condition is not assessed.
An MOT typically takes between 45 minutes and 1 hour for a standard car. If the tester identifies advisories or minor repairs that need addressing on the day, it can take a little longer.
If your MOT expires you may only drive your car to a pre-booked MOT appointment. If your vehicle receives a 'Dangerous' defect, you must not drive it at all. A 'Major' failure means the car shouldn't be driven until repaired, while 'Minor' failures and advisories do not prevent you driving home.
You can book your MOT up to one month (minus a day) before it expires and still keep your existing anniversary date. So if your MOT expires on 31st March, you can test from 28th February without losing any days.
