The true annual cost of running a car in the UK

"How much will it cost to run?" is the question every sensible car buyer asks, and it's the question most salespeople answer with a vague wave of the hand and a quote of the official MPG figure. That number is a useful starting point, but the real annual cost of car ownership is a stack of seven or eight different line items that, put together, can easily exceed the monthly finance payment. Understanding each of them — and being realistic about which ones your own driving will actually incur — gives you a much clearer picture of what a specific car means for your monthly budget.

What our calculator covers (and what it doesn't)

The calculator above combines three live data sources: your car's official VCA combined MPG figure, the latest UK government weekly average pump price for your fuel type, and your Vehicle Excise Duty calculated from the official 2025-26 DVLA rate tables. Feed in your honest annual mileage and we do the arithmetic. What you get out is the "two certain costs" portion of car ownership: fuel and road tax. These are the two that change predictably with mileage, fuel price, and policy.

There are, however, four big costs we can't estimate for you because they depend too heavily on personal circumstances:

  • Insurance — driven by your postcode, age, no-claims history, occupation, and claims record. A 21-year-old in London with a 2.0-litre hot hatch will pay four or five times what a 55-year-old in a rural postcode pays for the same car.
  • Servicing and MOT — roughly £200–£600 a year for most mainstream cars. Specialist work (timing belts, clutches, DPF regens) can add hundreds in specific years.
  • Tyres — typically £60–£250 per tyre depending on size and brand, replaced every 20,000–40,000 miles. Factor £100–£300 a year for most cars, double that for performance cars.
  • Depreciation — the single biggest cost for most cars in their first five years, and the one owners feel least viscerally because it doesn't come out of their bank account each month.

Fuel: the most variable piece of the puzzle

Fuel is the cost that changes most month to month, driven by wholesale prices, exchange rates, fuel duty, VAT, and the competitive dynamics of the forecourt. UK pump prices have ranged between roughly £1.15 and £1.95 per litre over the past five years. That variability matters: at 10,000 miles a year in a 45 MPG car, the difference between £1.30 and £1.60 a litre is about £300 a year.

The gov.uk weekly fuel prices dataset we pull from publishes the UK average, which smooths out regional variation — supermarket forecourts (Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury's) are usually 3–5p cheaper than motorway services, and London and the South-East typically run 2–4p above the national average. Our figure is a fair estimate for a driver mixing supermarket and branded fuel stops.

How to get an accurate MPG for your actual driving

The MPG figure our calculator uses is the official WLTP combined result from the VCA dataset. In practice most drivers see 75–85% of that figure — the test is done on a rolling road with the air-con off and a carefully-trained driver, which doesn't reflect real-world use. If you want a running cost estimate closer to your actual experience, do a quick hand-calculation using the fill-to-fill method: fill the tank, reset the trip meter, drive a full tank, refill, and divide miles driven by litres put in × 4.546 (UK gallons). Do this over three tanks for a reliable average, then re-run our calculator but mentally deflate the MPG figure to your real number.

VED: predictable, non-negotiable, often overlooked

Vehicle Excise Duty is the one running cost you cannot optimise — the rate is set by your car's first registration date and emissions, and only changes when the government announces new bands in the annual Budget. For most modern cars it's £195 a year (£185 for hybrids). For cars registered 2001–2017, it ranges from £0 to £760 depending on CO2 band. The typical UK car: annual running cost benchmarks

To give a rough sense of the total cost including the parts we can't calculate, here are benchmarks from industry sources (AA, RAC, Kwik Fit, Which?) for typical UK ownership:

  • Small city car (e.g. Fiesta, Corsa, Polo) — £2,200–£3,000/year all-in at 8,000 miles/year
  • Family hatchback (e.g. Focus, Golf, Astra) — £2,800–£3,800/year at 10,000 miles
  • Mid-size SUV (e.g. Qashqai, Kuga, Tiguan) — £3,400–£4,500/year at 10,000 miles
  • Premium saloon (e.g. BMW 3 Series, Audi A4) — £4,000–£5,500/year at 10,000 miles
  • Electric mid-size (e.g. Model 3, ID.3, Kona Electric) — £2,500–£3,500/year if home-charging, more on public rapid chargers

These numbers assume sensible insurance profiles, mid-range servicing at independent garages, and no major unplanned repairs. Add 25–40% if you're under 25, drive a modified car, or live in a postcode with high claim rates.

Cutting running costs — what actually moves the needle

Most "money saving" articles focus on trivial savings like checking tyre pressures (worth about 1–2% on fuel). The things that genuinely change your annual spend by hundreds of pounds are: shopping around for insurance at every renewal (10–30% savings); using an independent garage rather than a franchised dealer for out-of-warranty servicing (30–60% savings on labour); filling up at supermarkets rather than branded forecourts (£80–£150/year); and buying a used car over three years old, which dodges the worst depreciation.
