An MOT tests your vehicle's roadworthiness. Inspectors check brakes, lights, tyres (tread depth and condition), steering and suspension, exhaust emissions, seatbelts, bodywork, windscreen visibility, and number plates. The engine's mechanical condition is not assessed.

If your MOT expires you may only drive your car to a pre-booked MOT appointment. If your vehicle receives a 'Dangerous' defect, you must not drive it at all. A 'Major' failure means the car shouldn't be driven until repaired, while 'Minor' failures and advisories do not prevent you driving home.

You can book your MOT up to one month (minus a day) before it expires and still keep your existing anniversary date. So if your MOT expires on 31st March, you can test from 28th February without losing any days.
