A standard car MOT at Halfords starts at £49.99, with some sites charging the DVSA maximum of £54.85. Halfords offers a standard car MOT for just £49.99, though this is location dependent and select garages may charge the standard price of £54.85. That £54.85 cap is set by government and applies to every Class 4 garage in the country, so the headline price is only half the story. The real question is what you pay across the full year: MOT, service, repairs and any membership fee on top.
This guide breaks down Halfords' current MOT and service pricing, the bundle discounts, the Motoring Club tiers, and a few catches worth knowing before you click book.
Halfords MOT prices in 2026
The base MOT at Halfords sits at £49.99, dropping to £44.99 for Free Motoring Club members and included entirely for Premium members. By joining the Halfords Motoring Club as a Free member, you can save £5 and unlock an MOT for £44.99 (or £49.85 depending on the selected garage). Or, even better, join as a Premium member and get your MOT included.
Worth flagging: the £54.85 figure isn't a Halfords number, it's the legal ceiling. The MoT test fee hasn't changed for 2026. The government has capped it at a maximum of £54.85 for a standard car (officially known as 'Class 4' vehicles), and a maximum of £29.65 for motorcycles. Garages can charge less than this, but they cannot charge more. So Halfords sitting at £49.99 isn't a deep discount, it's a small one. Plenty of independents undercut it.
Halfords does Class 4 (cars and small vans) and Class 7 (vans, pickups and transits between 3.0 and 3.5 tonnes) at most sites. Class 4 vehicles include cars (up to 8 passenger seats). Class 7 vehicles include pickups, vans and transits between 3.0 and 3.5 tonnes. Not all our Autocentres are able to perform Class 7 MOTs. If you drive a Transit Custom or a long-wheelbase Sprinter, ring ahead.
The three service tiers
Halfords runs five service levels overall, but for most petrol and diesel cars you're choosing between three. Halfords offers five levels of service to suit all vehicles: an Interim Service, Full Service, Major Service, MOT, plus EV and Hybrid services.
Interim Service
A 49-point check aimed at drivers covering big mileage. The 49-point Interim Service and MOT is designed for the high mileage car user (regularly exceeding 2000 miles a month), or vehicles which require frequent checks. ATA-trained technicians carry out the MOT, and test all of the main moving parts that may need attention over a short period of time. It centres on an oil and filter change plus essential fluid top-ups.
Full Service
Halfords' bread and butter, priced from £239.99. The full service price starts from £239.99, although the cost may vary depending on location and vehicle. Halfords also offers convenient payment plans via Payment Assist and Klarna. It's a 76-point inspection covering 77 checks including an air filter change and top-ups of brake fluid, power steering fluid and coolant. This is a comprehensive annual service for trouble-free motoring. It exceeds most manufacturers service schedules, and includes 77 checks and adjustments including an air filter change, a top up of brake fluid, power steering fluid and coolant. High quality parts are used and they check and record wear and tear items using a colour-coded reporting system.
Major Service
The big one, recommended every two years. The Major Service and MOT is the most comprehensive car service product, and covers parts that are regularly recommended for replacement every two years. All parts fitted are of Original Equipment (OE) quality, and Halfords guarantees all work for 2 years or 24,000 miles, whichever is sooner. They recommend booking a Major Service every two years to keep your car running smoothly. Expect a cabin filter and brake fluid replacement on top of everything in the full.
Bundle savings: are they real?
Yes, but smaller than the marketing suggests. Halfords applies a fixed discount when you book a service and MOT together, even on different days.
- Interim Service + MOT: save £14.99 by booking an MOT and service together, on the same day or different days. Discount already applied.
- Full Service + MOT: save £19.99 by booking an MOT and service together, on the same day or different days.
- Major Service + MOT: save £24.99 by booking an MOT and service together, on the same day or different days.
In practice that's roughly half the MOT fee knocked off when bundled. When you book a full service with an MOT bundle, you save up to 50% off your MOT, that's £19.99 back in your pocket. It's a genuine saving, but a good independent doing both for cash will often still beat it. Worth getting two quotes.
Motoring Club: Free vs Premium
The Free tier is genuinely free and gets you £5 off the MOT plus a welcome voucher. It's free to join and you'll receive money off your MOT, a free car health check and a welcome voucher that can be spent on any Halfords product or service.
Premium is the paid tier and is where the bigger savings sit. Premium motoring club members can save up to £89 off MOT and Major Service. Whether that's worth it depends entirely on how much you spend at Halfords. If you only need a yearly MOT, Free is the right choice. If you're tyre-shopping, servicing two cars and grabbing kit from the shop, the Premium maths starts to work.
Parts guarantee and what's actually covered
Halfords' warranty on fitted parts is one of the longer ones on the high street. All parts fitted at Halfords garages are guaranteed for a minimum of 2 years or 24,000 miles (whichever comes sooner). Some parts such as batteries include a longer warranty and the exact length will be stated on the product. The quality guarantee means that if a part that was fitted should fail, they'll replace or repair it at any of their garages. This guarantee only covers parts and labour, and excludes any additional costs incurred due to a warranty failure.
That last line matters. If a Halfords-fitted alternator fails on the M6 and you need recovery, the warranty pays for the replacement part and the labour to fit it. It doesn't pay for the tow.
EVs, hybrids and manufacturer servicing
Halfords services electric and hybrid cars across most of its network, though the MOT itself is the same test minus the emissions checks. EVs aren't exempt. From 2026 testers also carry out a detailed visual inspection of the high-voltage cabling (the bright orange stuff), the charging port and battery warning systems.
If you've got a car still under manufacturer warranty, Halfords offers manufacturer-spec servicing too. If you want to follow your manufacturer's recommended service schedule but don't want to pay dealership prices, manufacturer service plans are available. These services are tailored to the individual make, model and age mileage of your car, using original parts, equipment and service book stamps as standard to ensure your car warranty and resale value is maintained. Under Block Exemption rules, using Halfords for this won't void a manufacturer warranty. You can compare options at local servicing specialists on Fixaroo before committing.
How Halfords compares to independents
Independent garages frequently undercut the chains on MOT alone. Remember, these are maximum prices. Many garages offer MoTs for between £35 and £45 to win your business, though they often hope to recoup the difference on any repair work needed. So an MOT at a back-street garage might be £35 to your local Halfords' £49.99.
Where Halfords typically wins:
- Coverage. Over 600 sites means you can usually find one open at the weekend.
- Booking. Online slots, clear pricing, no awkward phone calls.
- Standardised parts warranty across the whole network.
- Same-day work on most jobs. Carried out by ATA-trained technicians, who can perform almost all required work on-site on the same day.
Where independents often win:
- Headline MOT price.
- Hourly labour rates on repairs.
- Familiarity with older or unusual vehicles.
- Negotiation. You can haggle at a small garage. You can't really haggle at a chain.

Booking tips that save real money
- Join the Free Motoring Club before you book. It costs nothing and saves £5 immediately.
- Book MOT and service together even if you split the dates. The bundle discount applies either way.
- Don't pay for a Major Service every year. The official guidance is every two years.
- Check advisories from your last MOT and fix the cheap stuff yourself (screenwash, bulbs, wipers).
- Get the quote in writing before authorising any repair work flagged during the service.
The last point is the one most drivers skip. Halfords will quote upfront on most jobs, but a flagged repair isn't a forced repair. You can take the car elsewhere or do the work yourself.
